The result of crossing a Poodle with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the teddy bear dog that is the Cavapoo is certainly the perfect size for safely playing with kids.

But what about the Cavapoo’s temperament and energy levels? Are Cavapoos good with kids? Let’s find out:

Can a Cavapoo Push a Child?

Did you know that smaller dogs tend to have great core strength? This means that they can stand up and walk around on their hind legs for a while with ease.

The same is true of most Cavapoos. A Cavapoo might walk over to you on their hind legs to greet you, or to show off for a treat.

Hind leg walking is a pretty impressive ability, especially if you make it into a trick that your Cavapoo does on command.

But when it comes to young children, a Cavapoo could easily shove a young child over when walking up to them on their hind legs.

With older children, this is less of a concern. But it’s something to be aware of with younger children.

Would a Cavapoo Knock a Kid Over?

Have you ever noticed the way some dogs tiptoe out onto the grass, sniff around a bit, do their business, and then suddenly they immediately start to sprint around in circles at their top speed for no apparent reason and with no regard to anything around them?

The Cavapoo is definitely one of the most major “zoomie” dog breeds there are, especially when they are young.

This disregard a Cavapoo displays for their surroundings while they’re zooming around can easily lead to quite a bad collision with a child, even when the Cavapoo is very small – Cavapoos can reach pretty high speeds!

So yes, when you have a small child, a Cavapoo will easily knock them over if they run into them. This is one reason why Cavapoos are not always good with younger children.

Does a Cavapoo Nip or Bite Children?

As soon as they are born, all puppies explore their world by nibbling everything – their box, their blankets, even their humans and their littermates!

This is all fine when a Cavapoo puppy doesn’t have any teeth yet, but what about when the Cavapoo puppy does get their teeth? What happens then?

Well, unfortunately, even long after a Cavapoo puppy gets their first set of teeth, a Cavapoo puppy will still continue to explore the world in this way, by biting everything in their path with these new, sharp teeth. Unfortunately, this sometimes includes children.

If you keep lots of teething toys and tug toys around when your Cavapoo is a puppy, they should prefer to bite these rather than all of you.

But thankfully, when they are older, a Cavapoo is far less likely to bite anyone, including kids!

Why is this? Well, after centuries of breeding, many dogs today still have incredibly strong urges to carry out their ancestral jobs – the Border Collie, for example, can’t resist herding rolling balls, pieces of litter blowing away.

And even people, while the Retriever loves to retrieve the newspaper, tennis balls, and that discarded sock from under your bed.

Some of these tendencies often cause dogs of these working breeds to nip children.

However, the Cavapoo has always just been bred as a lapdog and companion dog, and has zero ancestral urges that would cause this fluffball to mouth at children. This is one major reason why the Cavapoo is so good with kids.

Do be aware though, that a Cavapoo, as with any dog, may potentially bite if a younger child pulls on their long ears or fluffy tail, or if they are in pain.

Will a Cavapoo Jump up on a Kid?

As previously mentioned, the Cavapoo loves to get up on their hind legs and show off for everyone. Cavapoos also love to place their forepaws on people, whether they are an adult or child. This can be an impressive trick if you train your Cavapoo to stand up on your command.

But if your Cavapoo tries to place their forepaws on a young child, a Cavapoo can easily knock the young child over.

Therefore, you must train your Cavapoo not to jump on anyone unless they are commanded to, especially if there are young children living in or visiting your household.

Young children who live in your household must also be instructed to command your Cavapoo not to jump upon them.

Because of this, the Cavapoo is not so suitable to be around young kids. Older kids might not mind a Cavapoo’s muddy pawprint on their leg and Cavapoo slobbers all over the knee when they get home, but a Cavapoo can not be allowed to continually jump up on small kids.

Could a Cavapoo Play With a Kid?

If there’s one thing the Cavapoo loves, it’s playing with children. The Cavapoo loves to play games like fetch and Frisbee out in the garden or park with kids.

In fact, the Cavapoo tends to prefer playing with kids to playing with other dogs or by themselves.

Unlike other dog breeds like the Terrier, a Cavapoo’s nature means that this chilled-out dog won’t try to snatch a ball or toy out of a child’s hand, for example.

So, not only does the Cavapoo love to play with children, but they are also a safe, friendly canine playmate for a kid.

This is one of the reasons why a Cavapoo is absolutely perfect for children.

Will a Kid be Able to Walk a Cavapoo?

Do you ever see people walking large dogs like the Labrador or Greyhound with aplomb? Yet, do you ever notice all the people who struggle to control much smaller dogs?

Is it impeccable training on their owner’s part that has these obedient pooches heeling, constantly sticking by their owner’s side? Or is it the dog’s breed?

In truth, it is both of these things that contribute to how easy it is to walk a particular dog. When it comes to the Cavapoo, it is true that their small size means that the Cavapoo is an easy enough dog to walk for most people.

But on top of this, this centuries-old obedient and loyal lapdog is incredibly easy to train to carry out most commands.

This means that if your Cavapoo tugs on the lead, they probably wouldn’t have the ability to tug the lead out of a kid’s hand.

But as well as this, it should be simple to train your Cavapoo to walk properly on the lead, heeling beside you without pulling.

So, most older kids should find it easy to take a Cavapoo for a walk, and maybe even find it easy to train them to heel.

Can a Kid Groom a Cavapoo?

Did you know that the Cavapoo has a non-shedding double coat? The fur of dogs with this type of coat doesn’t trigger people’s allergies or asthma attacks. They are known as hypoallergenic.

However, this type of coat also requires some maintenance – you have to brush a Cavapoo’s coat every day and bathe them around once a month. Would a kid be able to do this?

Well, since the Cavapoo is such a small dog, they don’t have too much surface area to brush. So, a kid could easily take care of a Cavapoo’s coat, with a little help from some adults when it comes to giving them a bath.
