The Cavapoo is a loyal, friendly fluffball. Though Cavapoos can be fairly large dogs, all Cavapoos think they are lapdogs. Sure, the Cavapoo is a playful, active, agile dog.

But, Cavapoos also love to snuggle up all day too. So, what about when it comes time to leave your Cavapoo at home by themselves?  Can Cavapoos be left alone? In this article, this is exactly the subject we’re taking a look at. So, read on if you want to know more about the Cavapoo!

A Cavapoo is a loyal and friendly dog, the Cavapoo can absolutely be left at home alone. Just make sure you give your Cavapoo something to keep them occupied, as well as making sure they are safe, warm, and have access to food and water.

What kind of dog is the Cavapoo?

A mix between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Poodle, the Cavapoo has the lapdog friendliness and companionability of the KC Spaniel coupled with the unrivalled intelligence of the Poodle. The resulting breed is athletic, hypoallergenic, and of course, very loyal!

This fluffball adores praise and attention, and so, is very easy to train. This pooch also has fairly high energy requirements. So, proper early training and plenty of active play daily are paramount.

Are Cavapoos prone to separation anxiety?

Yes. Cavapoos are only half lapdog but are full of loyalty. When you leave your Cavapoo at home alone, they may whine and protest or chew things up when you are out. These are all symptoms of separation anxiety. If left untreated, separation anxiety can endanger your Cavapoo and cause both of you a lot of stress!

That being said, separation anxiety is totally treatable and even preventable.

How long can I leave a Cavapoo puppy alone?

Though the Cavapoo is a large breed dog, a Cavapoo puppy still needs regular bathroom breaks, no matter how well house-trained they are. A two-month-old Cavapoo puppy, for example, can hold it in for two or three hours max, while for a four-month-old, this limit rises to five hours.

When your Cavapoo reaches the grand old age of seven months, they peak at being able to go eight hours without a toilet break. This means a Cavapoo staying indoors is theoretically able to hold out just long enough for you to come back from work or school. This isn’t a great solution, though.

Ideally, a Cavapoo of any age should get at least one bathroom break during the day. This may mean you take your lunch at home, hire a dog walker, ask a next-door neighbor or relative to swing by during the day, or give your pooch access to the great outdoors.

You could even train your Cavapoo to use an indoor toilet solution, like a tray containing newspaper or grass. There are even commercially-available dog toilets!

What precautions should I take when leaving my Cavapoo at home alone?

Maybe your Cavapoo isn’t much of a chewer. But, you should still move all loose objects out of your Cavapoo’s reach. This includes shoes, hats, glasses, remote controls, and even more robust objects like keys or ornaments. You never know what a bored Cavapoo may decide to destroy!

You should also think about leaving out chew toys and puzzle toys for your Cavapoo when home by themselves. Again, your Cavapoo may not be that interested in toys. But, puzzle toys and chew toys can keep your Cavapoo occupied for a long time when you have to go out.

If you really can’t remove all dangerous objects and other hazards from your Cavapoo’s vicinity, why not crate-train your Cavapoo? Using a crate is an easy way to restrict your Cavapoo’s access to things they shouldn’t get at. A crate also provides your Cavapoo with a cosy place to chill out. Make sure you properly crate train your Cavapoo before you leave them alone in your crate.

How can I prepare for leaving my Cavapoo at home alone?

Before you leave your Cavapoo at home alone, it’s a good idea to tire them out. So, give your Cavapoo plenty of active play before you set off to work or school. Games like Fetch or Frisbee are great for providing the high-octane activity needed to exhaust your pooch.

Then, when it’s time for your Cavapoo to settle down again, provide them with a chew toy or puzzle toy to keep them occupied. A Kong filled with foods like peanut butter, cream cheese, and pumpkin puree is a favorite option among many Cavapoo owners. For even longer-lasting fun on a hot day, you can freeze the toy!

Giving your Cavapoo something to lick not only offers them a long-lasting source of entertainment and occupation, it also helps to relax them. So, if you want your Cavapoo to chill out and sleep while you’re at work or school, give them something they can lick. As always, top up your Cavapoo’s food and water bowls before you head out the door, too.

Though you’re sure to miss your Cavapoo, leave home calmly, without making any fuss. Head out the door without saying anything and without petting your Cavapoo. This may seem cruel, but leaving without making a fuss goes a long way in preventing separation anxiety.

Can I leave my Cavapoo at home alone outside?

It is possible to leave your Cavapoo alone in the yard when you go out. But, make sure your Cavapoo will not be exposed to adverse weather conditions. Your Cavapoo will need protection from the sun, as well as shelter from rain and wind. So, provide your Cavapoo with some shelter and shade. This could be a sturdy kennel or a porch area.

Make sure your Cavapoo has access to food and plenty of water, too. Placing your Cavapoo’s food and water bowls in a sheltered area will help keep them free from contamination and parasites.

You should also think about security. The friendly Cavapoo is a popular designer breed. Because of this status, the Cavapoo is a big target for theft. On top of this, most Cavapoos aren’t even remotely suspicious of strangers. Think about how friendly your own Cavapoo undoubtedly is – stealing your Cavapoo would be as simple as walking into your yard and clipping on a leash!

So, always make sure the gates to your yard are locked. As well as this, inspect your fence regularly to make sure it’s safe and secure. Don’t let your Cavapoo dig at the fences or jump at the gate. If your fence is low, a tie out cable and harness will keep your Cavapoo secure in the yard, as well as out and about.

So, can Cavapoos be left alone?

Yes. Though the Cavapoo is a loyal and friendly dog, the Cavapoo can absolutely be left at home alone. Just make sure you give your Cavapoo something to keep them occupied, as well as making sure they are safe, warm, and have access to food and water.
