Will CBD oil make my dog high? This popular, much-talked-about chemical has been appearing everywhere lately and seems to be used in treating a lot of different conditions. Find out below:

So, will CBD make my dog high?

No. CBD does not contain any tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. In the United States, CBD oil must contain less than 0.3% THC.

In the United Kingdom, this is 0.2%. So, CBD will not get your dog high. It is, however, a very useful treatment for a range of conditions that your dog might suffer from.

What is CBD for dogs?

Well first of all, what is CBD? You may have already heard a lot about it, especially with the widespread legalization of cannabis lately. CBD is a chemical derived from the marijuana or cannabis plant.

It is non-psychoactive. It has become very popular recently, with many people using the oil in lattes, cakes bath bombs, and all sorts of other things, as well as for treating various certain conditions. Many people give it to dogs and other animals, too.

What does CBD do for your dog’s health?

CBD oil makes a person or dog who takes it feel calm for some time. CBD does not contain THC though, which is what keeps it non-psychoactive.

CBD is often used to successfully treat conditions like arthritis, anxiety, and epilepsy in both humans and dogs.

It is not a substitute for the normal treatments for these conditions and is not a reason to discontinue using your normal medicine, but CBD does work well along with some existing medicines.

What does CBD help with?

Although it is still very new, CBD is currently used to treat anxiety, insomnia, depression, anxiety and arthritis amongst other conditions in humans.

Dog owners also use CBD to treat pain, anxiety, and the symptoms of allergies and arthritis in their dogs. For example, some owners give CBD to dogs who are scared of thunder or fireworks a little while before the storm or celebrations are expected to begin.

Then, the dog is far less scared and stressed when the noise actually starts. As well as this, many dog owners find that CBD helps to reduce seizures in dogs with epilepsy.

Is CBD dangerous for dogs?

CBD oil contains very low levels of THC, so it is not dangerous in this way. CBD oil also has very little known side effects.

But it is known that CBD oil can increase a dog’s production of saliva, causing increased thirst.

Higher doses of CBD oil can also cause a temporary drop in your dog’s blood pressure. As well as this, the calming effect of higher doses of CBD can cause substantial drowsiness in your dog.

How should I administer CBD to dogs?

If you are interested in giving your dog CBD, be sure to start them on a very low dose, lower than the packaging states. Then, keep a close eye on your dog to see how they deal with this.

After this, if your dog appears to be fine, you can consider moving them to a slightly higher dose next time.

As above, it is better to use CBD oil on your dog rather than treats containing CBD. At least at first. This way you have much better control and knowledge over how much CBD your dog is getting.

What should I look for when buying CBD oil for my dog?

If you’re shopping for CBD for your dog, take a look at the packaging. Try to look for organic CBD. Also, unless you are trying to treat a specific condition, go for a CBD oil that is purely just CBD, rather than it being diluted with other things. This is a better value. As well as this, try to find out how much CBD is actually in the product.

If the product doesn’t clearly state information like this, it isn’t worth your time. Products that claim to completely cure a disease or that don’t provide much information about their company are also to be avoided.

That being said, a CBD product that is geared towards treating a specific condition is still a good idea if you know what your dog has.

Going for a tincture or oil is the best way to control the dosage your dog gets.

What do “full-spectrum”, “isolate derived” and “broad spectrum” mean?

Did you know that CBD oils can also be either full spectrum or CBD isolate derived?

Full-spectrum means that the CBD product contains all the hundreds of other minor cannabinoids that naturally occur within the plant, rather than going through excessive filtering to be left with only cannabidiol.

This causes an “entourage effect”, where all the other cannabinoids make the effects of the CBD product substantially more effective.

So if you’re following a recipe or trying to measure a specific dosage, check to see whether you were instructed to use full spectrum or isolate derived CBD oil – full-spectrum CBD oil can be several times more powerful than isolate derived CBD oil.

There are also broad-spectrum CBD products – identical to full-spectrum CBD except that these contain absolutely no THC, not even the typical 0.3%.

CBD safety tips for dogs

It is possible for dogs and other pets to actually overdose on CBD, with symptoms like being tired,  vomiting, and hallucinations. This is mainly due to the trace levels of THC that are still present.

Therefore, it’s important to clearly label your CBD products so that other members of your household and visitors know exactly what they are and what they are used for.

If you buy or make CBD dog treats, store these treats in a place where your dog, other pets, and people cannot easily gain access to them.

You probably already do store your standard dog treats in a place where you know your dog can’t get at them.

Maybe your dog has gotten into the secret stash in the past and you have gone on to take further precautions. But, since a dog could overdose on treats containing CBD so easily, it is very important to be even more careful.

Treats containing CBD can look just like normal dog treats. So, if you allow other members of your household or visitors to give treats to your dog, it is worth considering storing dog treats that contain CBD in a separate place from the normal treats.

Or, make sure to keep them in their original packaging that displays the warnings and recommendations for how many treats to feed your dog.
