Dogs can eat most fish but like most foods, only in moderation.

Good fish for a dog to eat are:

  • Atlantic Mackerel.
  • Atlantic Herring.
  • Sardines.
  • Pink Salmon.
  • Blue Mussels.
  • Oysters.

Shad, carp and squaw fish have lots of sharp bones and should be avoided.

Try to avoid Tuna and King mackerel as it has high levels of mercury. Stick to white fish when you can.

Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and according to veterinarians have health benefits such as decreasing inflammation.

It is also a good alternative for dogs with allergies to more common ingredients, like chicken.

Risks of eating raw fish.

Many veterinarians will tell you to never ever feed your dog raw fish, because of the parasites and bacteria that live in the meat of the fish.

But I have never had a problem with my dog. And problems are few and far between. People have been eating raw fish for centuries and have been fine.

You can think of it as sushi for dogs.

Just be on the lookout for any parasites on the skin when you are preparing it for your dog, and always keep any meat products refrigerated and away from any other food.

Fishbones are small, brittle, and dangerous. They can lodge themselves in your dog’s mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines.
